New Mexico offers fine educational opportunities. The
University of New Mexico, in Albuquerque, boasts nearly 30,000 students, has branch campuses in Gallup, Los Alamos, Taos and Valencia County, and offers 210 certificate and degree programs. The
UNM School of Medicine has consistently been ranked as having some of the best rural medicine and family medicine programs in the country.
New Mexico State University (NMSU), based in Las Cruces, hosts over 26,000 students at its combined campuses. The NMSU is a land-grant institution and one of 52 institutions in the United States designated as a
Space Grant College.
Other noteworthy colleges reside in the Land of Enchantment. The New Mexico Institute of Mining and Technology in Socorro, also called New Mexico Tech, is a research university specializing in science and engineering. The New Mexico Highlands University in Las Vegas, New Mexico, is home to roughly 3500 students, many of whom are Hispanic. St. John’s College, in Santa Fe, offers a four-year liberal arts education.
Many schools exist for children to attend in New Mexico. There are nearly 800 schools in 89 public school districts and 209 private schools. New Mexico is ranked 13th nationally in per student spending each year, with an average of $8,208 per student per year. Albuquerque Public Schools is one of the largest public school districts in the nation, with over 87,000 students and over 11 high schools and associated elementary and middle schools.
